Cultivated aloes/agar wood. Agarwood, aloeswood, eaglewood, gharuwood or the Wood of Gods, commonly referred to as oud or oudh (from Arabic: عود, romanized: ʿūd, pronounced), is a fragrant, dark and resinous wood used in incense, perfume, and small hand carvings.
Sections of trees trunks or branches that contain patches of fragrant, resinous wood enter into the trade under the name “agarwood”. The resin is probably produced by the plant as a reaction against fungal infection or external wounding. Resin impregnated fragrant wood is usually found in trees older than 20 years.
Aquilaria malaccensis is the major source [6] of agarwood, a resinous heartwood, used for perfume and incense. [2] The resin is produced by the tree in response to infection by a parasitic ascomycetous mould, Phaeoacremonium parasitica , [ 7 ] a dematiaceous (dark-walled) fungus.

Agarwood refers to a resin that develops from some trees in the Aquilaria genus that are infected with a fungus. The tree produces a resin to protect itself against the fungus. This resin is agarwood. Japanese incense often uses 2 common terms for agarwood: jinkō (沈香) and kyara (伽羅). Jinkō refers to any kind of agarwood.
