The legend says that Manjushri revealed himself and preached at the summit of Mount Wutai, hence the name "Bodhisattva Summit Temple" (菩萨顶).It is also known as "Spiritual Black Eagle Peak" (灵鹫峰) due to its geographical position similar to the Lingjiu Peak described by Sakyamuni in the city of Rajgir northeast of the Kingdom of Magadha.
The Manjushri Hall is 16.5-metre (54 ft) wide and 11-metre (36 ft) deep with a single eave gable and hip roof (单檐歇山顶). Five statues of Manjushri with different appearance enshrined in the hall. In the spring of 1750, Qianlong Emperor visited Mount Wutai and wrote a poem to eulogize the hall.
Mount Wutai is one of the Four Sacred Mountains in Chinese Buddhism. Each of the mountains is viewed as the bodhimaṇḍa (道場; dàocháng) of one of the four great bodhisattvas. Wǔtái is the home of the Bodhisattva of wisdom, Mañjuśrī or "文殊" (Wénshū) in Chinese. Mañjuśrī has been associated with Mount Wutai since ancient times.
