I don't particularly agree with how the article defines terms or frames the situation. Left 4 Dead is not an asymmetrical game. It is a symmetrical game with asymmetrical gameplay. In L4D one side are the humans and one side are the zombies. This is assumes.

I love Asymmetrical gameplay. It's difficult to do, and you're always going to have more complaints about balance issue I think. It's definitely a risk. My personal favourite is Natural Selection 2. It had a lot of issues at launch, but I really love it. Starcraft is a great example of an asymmetrical RTS. The races don't share the same mechanics.
