The county is situated in the Ridge-and-Valley Appalachians, a range characterized by long, narrow ridges alternating with similarly shaped valleys. Prominent ridges in Union County include Copper Ridge, Hinds Ridge, and Lone Mountain. The southern end of Clinch Mountain forms part of the county's border with Grainger County to the east.
Maynardville (originally named Liberty) is a city in and the county seat of Union County, Tennessee, United States. [11] The city was named to honor Horace Maynard, who successfully defended the creation of Union County from a challenge from Knox County. [4] Its population was 2,413 at the 2010 census, up from 1,782 at the 2000 census.
