Bedford (pop. 36,354 [2]) is a former town and now a district of Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. It is situated on the north west shore of the Bedford Basin in the central area of the municipality. It borders the neighbouring communities of Hammonds Plains to the west, Sackville to the north, Dartmouth to the east, and mainland Halifax to the south.

An occupation by about 300 people began with about 25 tents including a medical tent, art supplies, a food and entertainment tent hosting discussion groups, art creation as well as a daily General Assembly.

On 1 April 1996, the City of Dartmouth, the City of Halifax, the County of Halifax, and the Town of Bedford amalgamated and created the Halifax Regional Municipality. Subsequently, the entirety of the former City of Halifax was re-established as the Community of Halifax and is coterminous with the former city itself.
