On 18 August of that year, an atmospheric-powered goods train, hauling eleven goods wagons and weighing 120 long tons (122 t; 134 short tons), travelled the 8 + 1 ⁄ 4 miles (13.3 km) distance from Exeter to Starcross; this feat made the South Devon Railway the first, and the only, line that ran goods trains using the atmospheric system.
