A Methodist church had been present in Gary since 1906 (also the year of the city's founding). In 1916, Dr William Grant Seaman became its pastor. Seaman envisaged a much larger church to serve the town, wanting to bring a prominent religious presence into what was then a neighbourhood with numerous brothels and drinking establishments.

Black Oak is a neighborhood located on the far southwest side of Gary, Indiana. As of 2000, Black Oak had a population of 4,216, which was 84.7% white.
