On September 15, 1942, the United States Navy commissioned the Naval Reserve Aviation Base on the south side of the station. On 1 January 1943, the Naval Reserve Aviation Base was renamed Naval Air Station Memphis. During the war, Naval Air Station (NAS) Memphis was a primary flight training center for aviators.
During the postwar period of the mid-1940s through the mid-1990s, NAS Memphis hosted numerous locally based Naval Air Reserve and Marine Air Reserve flying squadrons, as well as a major naval air technical training center (NATTC Millington) that provided the bulk of enlisted aviation specialty training for the US Navy and Marine Corps.
The US Navy's main airfields are designated as Naval Air Stations or Naval Air Facilities, with Naval Outlying Landing Fields (NOLF) and Naval Auxiliary Landing Fields (NALF) having a support role.
