The dollar was the currency of Mauritius until 1877. Initially, it was made up of Spanish dollars , with paper money and new coins being issued in the 1820s (see Anchor coinage ). The dollar was initially pegged at a value of 2 Indian rupees , then at 4 shillings sterling .
On the bottom-left is the coat of arms of Mauritius. There is also a drawing of the Bank of Mauritius building and a portrayal of the statue of justice in the background of each of the denominations in the centre of the note. The value of the note is in the top-right corner with the "Rs" symbol in front the value.
The denominations were sixteenth, eighth, quarter and half dollars, indicated by the Roman numerals XVI, VIII, IV and II on each side of the anchor. The reverse design was the royal coat of arms.
