Hunter was established in 1869 as "The Female Normal and High School", a private school to prepare young women to become teachers. The original school was composed of an elementary and a high school. A kindergarten was added in 1887, and in 1888, the school was incorporated into a college.
Exeter is one of the nation's wealthiest boarding schools, with a financial endowment of $1.6 billion as of June 2024, and houses the world's largest high school library. The academy admits students on a need-blind basis and offers free tuition to students with family incomes under $125,000.

Admission to the program is highly competitive, with many applying over a year in advance. The nature of the program allows middle school students to take courses taught by high school teachers (often with high school material) and to take part in clubs, activities and services that would normally not be available at a regular middle school.
The school is named after Edward John O'Dea who was bishop of Seattle when the school was built. O'Dea is a part of the Archdiocese of Seattle . Of its 480 students in four grades in 2022, 56% were Catholics, 53% were Caucasian, 16% were African American, and 19% were multi-racial.
The school consistently scores among the top high schools in the U.S. In 2009, Young was awarded the Blue Ribbon Award. [8] The academic center is an accelerated program for seventh and eighth graders. Seventh and eighth graders are immersed in an intense high school experience, taking courses for high school credit.
The boys' tennis team won the 2006 Group III state championship, defeating Moorestown High School 3½-1½ in the semifinals and Ramapo High School 5–0 in the finals to take the title. [49] The 2007 team won the North II, Group III state sectional title with a 4–1 win vs. Ridge High School. [50]
