West Hempstead is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) in the Town of Hempstead in Nassau County, on Long Island, in New York, United States. The population was 19,835 at the time of the 2020 census. [ 2 ]
The West Hempstead School District was established in the early 19th century in order to serve the children residing in the western rural areas of Hempstead.The Chestnut Street School was the first schoolhouse in the district to be established, the school was a single-room building, crowned by a bell tower on the intersection of Chestnut and School Street.
The Island Garden Arena was a 5,200-seat arena in West Hempstead, New York. It was built in 1957 by Arnold "Whitey" Carlson, [1] a descendant of Swedish immigrants.
