The race was first run in 1963 and it takes place on the Ohio River in the span that runs between Louisville, Kentucky and Jeffersonville, Indiana. Until 2009, the race was traditionally between the Belle of Louisville and the Delta Queen , although other steamboats have participated.
While the first steamboat race was Aug. 19, 1928, the annual competition didn't kickoff until the Belle of Louisville took on the Delta Queen in 1963.
The Office of Kentucky Nature Preserves owns and manages the preserve and was dedicated June 24, 1979. [2] The reserve is an undeveloped riverine island and is known for its extensive variety of waterbirds. [2] Even though the preserve has a variety of birds, not many people visit the island as the only access is by boat.
