The idea for Transition Skatepark and Extreme Sports Centre was conceived by Mr Neil Stevenson while he and his family lived in Houston, Texas between 2001-2003. Both of Mr Stevenson's children are avid skateboarders and, while in the US, had access to the world-class facilities offered by VANS skate parks and others.
Pearl Jam and VANS collaborated on a skate shoe, donating they money raised from the shoe to help the skatepark raise the money to build the first stage of the skatepark. The Tony Hawk Foundation helped with the park as well, working with the Stronghold Society, a skateboarding non-profit founded by Walt Pourier and Jim Murphy. [3] [8]
