Hilton Head Island, often referred to as simply Hilton Head, is a Lowcountry resort town and barrier island in Beaufort County, South Carolina, United States. [8] It is 20 miles (32 km) northeast of Savannah, Georgia (as the crow flies), and 95 miles (153 km) southwest of Charleston .
The Hilton Head Island metropolitan area, officially the Hilton Head Island–Bluffton–Port Royal, SC Metropolitan Statistical Area as defined by the United States Census Bureau, [2] is a metropolitan statistical area consisting of the two southernmost counties in the Lowcountry region of South Carolina, centered on the resort town of Hilton Head Island.
The historic site and ruins are located in between Baynard Park Road and Plantation Drive within present day Sea Pines Plantation, a private gated community on the south end of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. The site consists of below ground archaeological remains covering an area just under six acres and a series of four ruins.
In recent years, Hilton Head has also developed a large permanent resident population. Hilton Head Island, which has an area of approximately 55 square miles (140 km 2 ), had a year-round population of 37,661 at the 2020 census , [ 3 ] although during the peak of summer vacation season the population can swell to 150,000.
It was the first toll road built in South Carolina in modern history. [8] A majority of the road users pay their tolls using Palmetto Pass, South Carolina's system for electronic toll collection. Tolls were removed on June 30, 2021, not long after the last of the bonds sold to build the road were retired. [9] [10]
