The Sri Lankan Ordinary Level (O-level) formerly called Senior School Certificate (SSC), is a General Certificate of Education (GCE) qualification in Sri Lanka, conducted by the Department of Examinations of the Ministry of Education. It is based on the Cambridge University Ordinary Level qualification.

The National Institute of Library and Information Sciences (NILIS), University of Colombo was established in 1999. The purpose of the institute is to provide postgraduate and general training facilities in the Library and Information Science field with special attention to the school/teacher librarianship.
The library was built in 1933 and is Sri Lanka's second main public Library, only rivalled by Colombo Public Library [2] During the early 1980s, it was one of the biggest libraries in Asia, containing over 97,000 books and manuscripts. C.W.W. Kannangara, known as the father of free education in Sri Lanka, played a pivotal role in transforming the country's education system. Born in 1894 in a small village in Ambalangoda , he faced numerous challenges in his early life, which fueled his determination to ensure that others would not suffer the same educational disadvantages.
