Best Western International, Inc. owns the Best Western Hotels & Resorts brand, which it licenses to over 4,700 hotels worldwide. [1] The franchise, with its corporate headquarters in Phoenix, Arizona, [2] includes more than 2,000 hotels in North America. [3] The brand was founded by M. K. Guertin in 1946.
Key West was always an important military post, since it sits at the northern edge of the deepwater channel connecting the Atlantic and the Gulf of Mexico (the southern edge 90 miles [140 km] away is Cuba) via the Florida Straits. The warm and sunny winter climate, with average highs around 75 °F (24 °C) and lows above 60 °F (16 °C), is the main tourist season in the Florida Keys. Key West is the driest city in Florida, and most of the Florida Keys can become quite dry at the height of the dry season.
Guertin was known as "Mr. Motel" to a generation of owners who were involved in building Best Western. Under Best Western's ownership model, [5] each hotel is independently owned and operated, and the brand supports hotels with marketing and supply support. Best Western is now a global hotel brand with 4,200 hotels in more than 100 countries. [1]
Locations are meant to fill the lodging needs of smaller communities that might not otherwise be served by other hotel chains. [2] Cobblestone acquired Key West Inns and Centerstone Hotels from Vimana Franchise in August 2018. [3] In October 2018 Cobblestone also acquired Boulders Inn & Suites
