At the time of formation, Jharkhand state had 18 districts. Later, six more districts were carved out by reorganizing these districts. The 23rd and 24th districts- Khunti and Ramgarh (carved out of erstwhile Ranchi and Hazaribagh District respectively) were made a district on 12 September 2007.

Jharkhand (/ ˈ dʒ ɑːr k ə n d /; [8] Hindi: [d͡ʒʱɑːɾkʰəɳɖ]; lit. ' the land of forests ') is a state in eastern India. [9] The state shares its border with the states of West Bengal to the east, Chhattisgarh to the west, Uttar Pradesh to the northwest, Bihar to the north and Odisha to the south.
The district has a population density of 572 inhabitants per square kilometre (1,480/sq mi). [1] Its population growth rate over the decade 2001-2011 was 23.9%. [ 1 ] Ranchi has a sex ratio of 950 females for every 1000 males, [ 1 ] and a literacy rate of 76.06%. 43.14% of the population lives in urban areas.

It is the part of State Capital Region (SCR). Ramgarh was made a district on 12 September 2007. It was carved out of erstwhile Hazaribagh District.
