The school is zoned to receive students from Fountain, and the Colorado Springs suburbs of Security and Widefield. Mesa Ridge opened in 1997. The first graduating class commenced in 2000. Mesa Ridge is the newest of three high schools in the district, after Widefield High School and Discovery High School.
For the 2018–19 school year Desert Ridge High School received a "B" school grade from the Arizona Department of Education. Recently Widefield High School has enjoyed much success in football, baseball, basketball, wrestling, and soccer, with football making it to the 2010 state playoffs. [3] The school's district rival is Mesa Ridge High School. The Gladiators also have a rival in nearby Fountain-Fort Carson High School.

Due to constant conflicts coordinating with the activities and sports programs of other schools on traditional schedules, and with school district professional training programs, the year-around schedule was discontinued in the 1987–1988 school year. Mesa Verde changed to a traditional August to June two semester schedule from 1987 to 1996.
