The department was previously called the Department of State Development, Infrastructure, Local Government and Planning, and the Department of State Development, Tourism and Innovation. It was renamed from the former in November 2024 during machinery of government changes after the 2024 Queensland state election .
The department works with Queensland Rail, port authorities, other state and federal government departments, local governments, industry, and the community. Following the 2012 state election, Premier Campbell Newman appointed one Minister for the whole department. In 2015, Labor headed by Annastacia Palaszczuk won the state election.
