Remsen Union Community School District is a rural public school district headquartered in Remsen, Iowa. The district is mostly in Plymouth County with a portion in Sioux County. The district formed on July 1, 1993, as a result of the merger of the Marcus and Meriden-Cleghorn school districts. [4] The district inherited the Cleghorn School, which first opened in 1920. By 2015 the school had 90 students in grades 4–6. In 2015 the district voted to close the school in order to have a yearly savings of $130,000.
The Remsen-Union Rockets competed in baseball, basketball, cheerleading, dance team, football, golf, softball, track and field, and volleyball. They also shared a bowling, cross-country, and wrestling program with Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn. The teams had a rivalry with local high schools Remsen St. Mary's and Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn.
The two districts had established a grade-sharing agreement in 2014 where they had joint secondary schools. [5] The Southeast Valley school district was established on July 1, 2023. For the 2023–2024 school year, the school district continued operating the schools from the predecessor districts.
Gehlen Catholic School is a PreK-12 Roman Catholic school located in LeMars, Iowa. [1] Gehlen's athletic teams are known as the Jays. They compete in the War Eagle Conference with eight other teams from northwest Iowa. Their main rival is the other Roman Catholic school in the War Eagle, Remsen St. Mary's High School.
During Prohibition, Remsen was a major player in the brewing, transporting and sale of illegal alcohol. Its location adjacent to larger midwestern cities and the amount of farmland between homes made it a perfect area to make moonshine. Much of the moonshine produced ended up in one of two other Iowa cities: Sioux City or Pocahontas.
The school district is asking voters to approve an increase in the maintenance and operations portion of the property tax rate, from 72.9 cents per $100 of assessed value to 73.69 cents.
