Prahran campus buildings. Prahran Campus of Melbourne Polytechnic was established in 2013 as a hybrid educational organisation developed and administered by Melbourne Polytechnic when it was known as Northern Melbourne Institute of TAFE (NMIT), offering vocational education courses encompassing Certificate, Diploma, Advanced Diploma levels and Bachelor degrees at Prahran campus.
Previous courses were only available at the Certificate or Diploma level at a variety of regional TAFEs. The course is based at Melbourne Polytechnic's 300 hectares (741 acres) thoroughbred stud, Northern Lodge, north of Melbourne, which has sold its yearlings for up to $125,000 as part of its commercial activities. [27]
It is a dual-sector university, providing courses in both higher education and technical and further education (TAFE). The university has several campuses in Melbourne Central Business District, Melbourne Western Region, and in Sydney, comprising six academic colleges, six research institutes, seven research centres and VU's Victoria Polytechnic.
However Melbourne Polytechnic was accredited in 2015 to offer two master's degree courses. [3] Similarly, some universities (e.g., Charles Darwin University and Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology ) offer vocational education courses (traditionally the domain of TAFE); these are funded by the local state and territory governments.
Most universities are government owned and mostly self-regulated. For other institutes (VETs, i.e. TAFE & RTO) there are two national regulators for tertiary education for registration, recognition and quality assurance of both the "provider institutes" as well as the "individual courses" provided by the providers.
