The university was first founded on 18 July 1946 during the British Raj, and it was originally named University of Saugar, Saugor. In February 1983 the name was changed to that of Sir Hari Singh Gour, the DHGV University's founder, by the State Government. [3] On 15 January 2009 it was declared as a central university. [4]
The institute initially functioned from its old site close to "Dr. Hari Singh Gour University Sagar". It was shifted to the newly constructed campus in December 1986. Its campus is housed inside the 220 acres land allotted by the government in 1985, on a hillock about 10 km from Sagar City near Baheriya Village.
