Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) is a public research university focusing primarily on health sciences with a main campus, including two hospitals, in Portland, Oregon. The institution was founded in 1887 as the University of Oregon Medical Department and later became the University of Oregon Medical School . [ 1 ]
OHSU vacated the OGI property in 2014, and it was sold again in 2015 for $15.1M. [63] The OGI degree programs in biochemistry, molecular biology, computer science and engineering, electrical engineering, and environmental science and engineering were moved to OHSU's Marquam Hill complex. The rest went to PSU or were discontinued.
The program has its origins in the non-NIH funded MD-PhD training offered at the nation's research-centric medical schools. An early dual-degree program began at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in 1956. [4] Other prominent medical schools quickly followed this example and developed integrated MD-PhD training structures.
It had a student body of about 330 full-time students, with about one-third of those seeking PhDs. The student body also included about 250 non-degree students. [6] Since OGI's merger with OHSU, research conducted at the School has increasingly focused on applying technology to complex problems of human and ecosystem health.
These institutions and academic programs would later merge to form OHSU. [2] In 1974, these hospitals, schools, and academic programs were brought together to form the new University of Oregon Health Sciences Center, and became the state of Oregon's only academic medical center. [3] [4] It was renamed Oregon Health Sciences University in 1981.
