The University of Virginia has an honor code, formally known as the Honor System, [1] is intended to be student administered.. It was founded by Virginia students in 1842 after John A. G. Davis, chairman of the faculty and professor of law, who was attempting to resolve a conflict between students, was shot to death. [2]

On September 5, 1950, the court ruled in favor of Swanson's admission to the UVA School of Law on the grounds that he was a qualified applicant and that UVA was the only institution in the state at which Swanson could pursue a graduate degree in law. [7] Swanson registered for classes as a graduate student in the law school on September 15, 1950.
The Frank Batten School, located in Charlottesville, Virginia, was established in 2007 by a $100 million gift from University of Virginia alumnus Frank Batten.
