RadioShack (formerly written as Radio Shack) is an American electronics retailer that was established in 1921 as an amateur radio mail-order business. Its original parent company, Radio Shack Corporation, was purchased by Tandy Corporation in 1962, shifting its focus from radio equipment to hobbyist electronic components sold in retail stores.
The Realistic name carried on into 1994 as the rest of the Tandy-produced stock was slowly being sold off. In that year, all outsourced audio equipment formerly bearing the Realistic name would carry the Radio Shack name, and the video equipment was renamed to Optimus, another private label audio equipment brand sold by the company since 1967.
They were also used for low-voltage DC power input from wall adapters. In the latter role, they were soon replaced by coaxial DC power connectors. 2.5 mm phone jacks have also been used as headset jacks on mobile telephones (see § Mobile devices).
