After World War II, it became Doshisha Joshi Daigaku (Doshisha Women's College of Liberal Arts), and was chartered as a four-year higher education institution in 1949. The first graduate program started in 1967. A new campus, the Kyotanabe Campus, was opened in 1986, about 30 km to the south of the Imadegawa campus.

The following is a list of current and historical women's universities and colleges in Japan. A women's college is an institution of higher education where enrollment is all-female. Most of these are private universities ; a few are funded by the prefectural governments; the only two funded by the national government are Nara and Ochanomizu .
In addition, TUJ offers non-degree programs including the Academic English Program (AEP), Continuing Education, and Corporate Education. [6] As of 2022, TUJ enrolled 2,071 degree-seeking students: 1,841 undergraduates and 230 graduate students and 8 Boyer College of Music and Dance (Music Therapy) students.
The university has undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral programs [1] and five research institutes. [2] It also contains affiliated schools that span from kindergarten to high school. The PhD program is taught entirely in English and is individually tailored to each student. Students are encouraged to focus their research on cross-disciplinary areas of studies. [6] Students are recruited through much higher levels of competition than that of the entrance examination for graduate schools of top national universities in Japan.
