Villa Rica / ˌ v ɪ l ə ˈ r ɪ k ə / (Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese translation: Rich Village) is a city in Carroll and Douglas counties in the U.S. state of Georgia. Villa Rica is placed in the Atlanta metropolitan area. Additionally, there are unincorporated areas in Paulding County with Villa Rica postal addresses.
When the Spanish explorer Hernán Cortés arrived in what is now Mexican territory on 22 April 1519, he founded a city, which he named Villa Rica de la Vera Cruz, referring to the area's gold and dedicated to the "True Cross", because he landed on the Christian holy day of Good Friday, the day of the Crucifixion.
The city of Villa Rica, and a small portion of Austell are both also located in Douglas County. Douglas County is included in Metro Atlanta . It has attracted new residents as jobs have increased in the Atlanta area.
Villarrica was founded as Santa María Magdalena de la Villa Rica (Saint Mary Magdalene of the Rich Town) in 1552 by Jerónimo de Alderete. The site of foundation was likely near that of present-day Pucón. [4] During its early years Villarrica was an important gold and silver mining centre. [4]
The city demolished the old Villa Rica Electric & Light and E.L. Esterwood mill (later known as Golden City Hosiery) for greenspace, amphitheater and future new city hall. [3] The Villa Rica Electric & Light made ice and also was the local bottler for Coca-Cola from 1903 to 1923 in the hometown of Asa Candler. [4]
Villa Rica District is one of eight districts of Oxapampa Province in Pasco Department, Peru. The district has an area of 896 square kilometres (346 sq mi) and a population of 18,673 in 2017. [ 1 ] The capital of the district is the town of Villa Rica which had a population of 11,900 in 2017. [ 2 ]
