Cleveland State was formerly in the Mid-Continent Conference (1982–1994) and North Star Conference (1989–1992). Cleveland State previously fielded baseball, men's cross country as well as men and women's track and field. As Fenn College they fielded men's ice hockey and rifle. Cleveland State has a number of club sports as well.

The 2014–15 Cleveland State Vikings men's basketball team represented Cleveland State University in the 2014–15 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. Their head coach was Gary Waters in his ninth season. The Vikings played their home games at the Wolstein Center and were members of the Horizon League.
In 2004–05, the Vikings finished 9–17 (6–10 in the Horizon League). Cleveland State played for the first time since late in the 1990–91 season in Woodling Gym, which served as the home of Viking men's basketball from the 1972–73 season until the Wolstein Center opened prior to the 1991–92 season.
