Star Alliance is an airline alliance headquartered in Frankfurt, Germany. [5] Founded on 14 May 1997, it was the world's first global airline alliance. [1] As of April 2024, it is also the world's largest airline alliance by market share, holding 17.4%, compared to 13.7% for SkyTeam and 11.9% for Oneworld.
It has been a member of Star Alliance since 2012, and is currently one of two Chinese airlines that are members. [4] In 2010, the airline carried 16.5 million passengers, up 9% from the previous year. [5] The airline had its headquarters in the Lintian Building at Shenzhen Airport. [6] [7]
On 18 November 2004, Croatia Airlines joined Star Alliance. [citation needed] Airbus and Croatia Airlines announced on 22 October 2008 the order of four additional 132-seat A319 aircraft, to be delivered from 2013. [5]

In 2015, Star Alliance was the largest with 23% of total scheduled traffic in revenue passenger kilometres (RPKs)/revenue passenger miles (RPMs), followed by SkyTeam with 20.4% and Oneworld with 17.8%, leaving 38.8% for others. [2]
On December 12, 2007, Shanghai Airlines was officially welcomed as the 19th member of Star Alliance, which consolidated the alliance's presence in the Shanghai market. [6] On June 11, 2009, it was announced that Shanghai Airlines would merge with China Eastern Airlines.

On 6 March 2012, a new Copa Airlines Boeing 737-800 (registered HP-1728CMP) carried the Star Alliance livery. Also, it introduced a redesigned font style in the Copa Airlines' logo. This plane was inactive until 21 June, when it was exhibited in the celebration of the company's official integration to Star Alliance.
