In 2019, the pla kat, or Siamese fighting fish, was officially recognized as Thailand's national aquatic animal. The Fisheries Department of Thailand had promoted this recognition the previous year, which was approved by both the National Identity Committee and the National Cultural Committee, then officially announced as adopted in February 2019.
