Susan Mary Alsop (née Jay; June 19, 1918 – August 18, 2004) was an American writer and socialite active in Washington, D.C., political circles. She was the wife of columnist Joseph Alsop and a descendant of founding father John Jay .
Patten's father is Bill Patten Jr., whose mother was the Washington, D.C., socialite Susan Mary Alsop; Patten Jr.'s father was later alleged to have been the British politician Duff Cooper, with whom his mother had an affair while married to her first husband Bill Patten.
In 1961, he married Susan Mary Jay Patten, daughter of diplomat Peter Augustus Jay, a descendant of John Jay, and the widow of William Patten, [20] an American diplomat who was one of Alsop's friends. By this marriage he had two stepchildren, William and Anne. The couple divorced in 1978. [2]

On March 16, 1909, Jay was married to Susan Alexander McCook, the daughter of Civil War officer and prominent attorney John James McCook and granddaughter of Daniel McCook of the "Fighting McCooks". Together, they were the parents of Emily Kane Jay (1911–1926) and Susan Mary Alsop (1918–2004).
